Sedation Dentistry

Does the thought of going to the dentist make you nervous? You’re not alone. The Academy of General Dentistry estimates that 40 million Americans avoid dental visits because of fear or anxiety. At Vineyard Dental, Dr. Perez and our caring team understand this common condition and offer a proven solution: sedation dentistry.

At your sedation dentistry consultation, Dr. Perez will discuss your concerns and assess your needs. He may suggest nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or IV sedation, depending on the procedures involved and the level of sedation you require. Sedation dentistry is safe and effective. It’s used every day by people just like you to calm nerves and promote peace and tranquility.

Nitrous Oxide
Commonly called laughing gas, nitrous oxide encourages relaxation and alleviates potential discomfort. You’ll simply inhale the gas through a comfortable mask while Dr. Perez works on your smile. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly following your treatments and lets you get back to your normal activities that same day.

Oral Sedation
If you qualify for oral sedation, you’ll simply take a commonly prescribed sedative prior to your appointment. You’ll enter a state of total relaxation, and Dr. Perez will perform your dental work. He can potentially complete several procedures in a single session to turn back the clock on your smile and prevent you from attending multiple appointments. The effects of oral sedation wear off gradually. You’ll likely resume your normal activities the following day – with pleasant memories of your visit but no recollection of treatment details.

IV Sedation
Your dentist may recommend intravenous (IV) sedation for time-consuming procedures. It’s also a good choice for patients who have trouble fully opening their mouths or who can’t sit in a dental chair for long periods of time. We’ll bring in a trusted specialist, Dr. Mark Waggoner, to administer IV sedation and monitor you throughout your appointment. Many patients return to their normal routines the day following their IV sedation appointment.
